“Two black kids representing America,” LeBron James gets real about emotional Paris Olympics flag-bearer moment

Following a successful Paris Olympics campaign, LeBron James recalls the moment he was named Team USA flag-bearer and revealed how he felt.

Los Angeles Lakers legend, LeBron James is having one of the best years as a professional for his country. He won the fifth consecutive gold medal at the 2024 Olympic Games for Team USA. James was also named the tournament’s MVP for leading his team to victory against France.

Now, he has expressed gratitude for being chosen as the flag-bearer of the United States during the competition. Speaking recently on “The Shop”, he reminisced about the unforgettable experience during the Paris Olympics.

I was finally able to take my phone out of my pocket… And I started seeing some of the photos, I started seeing some of the videos. A lot of my family members were sending me stuff with clips that was going on… Me and Coco were just being up there, like two black kids, you know, up there representing America.

While LeBron James is widely known for his impressive career accolades, this particular achievement hit differently. According to him, being picked to represent his nation in that capacity, is a moment that is very special. James alongside tennis star Coco Gauff, were the first black Americans to be selected as flag-bearers for Team USA.

It appears the honor bestowed on the NBA star, spurred him into action as the men’s basketball team won gold. Throughout the tournament, James put in massive efforts to help his side go all the way to being crowned winners. He ended the competition averaging 14.2 points, a team-high 8.2 rebounds and a team-best 10.2 assists. This is in addition to winning his third Olympic gold medal.

Coco Gauff on being Team USA flag-bearer alongside LeBron James

Following the end of this year’s edition of the Olympics, tennis star Coco Gauff took time to reflect on her wins. The 20-year-old was elated to be the female flag-bearer for America alongside LeBron James. As such, she opened up to reporters in Cincinnati recently.

Being in the Olympics in general and representing my country was a great experience, and being the flag bearer was really cool. I didn’t expect to be honored at all. Being there with LeBron was really cool.

Coco Gauff said

While Gauff didn’t achieve the perfect run she wanted, that experience will always be memorable for both athletes. On his part, James will look to build on his recent success going into the 2024-25 NBA season. The Los Angeles Lakers superstar is set to challenge for another league title with the franchise.
