On the eastern outskirts of Washington, D.C., in Prince George’s County, Maryland, Durant and his siblings spent their formative years. He started out exceptionally tall and grew to 6 feet tall while still in middle school.

When he was younger, Durant aspired to join Vince Carter’s Toronto Raptors, his favorite team and player. He was teammates with future NBA players Michael Beasley, Greivis Vásquez, and Ty Lawson while playing Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) basketball for multiple teams in the Maryland region. Durant is still close with Ty Lawson.

He started wearing the number 35 at this time in memory of his AAU coach Charles Craig, who died at the age of 35.

When Durant was a little child, Wayne abandoned the family; Wanda and Wayne eventually got divorced, and Durant was raised by his grandmother Barbara Davis along with his mother.
