One of Durant’s most iconic moments as an NBA player came during his 2014 NBA MVP speech when he called his mother, Wanda Durant, the real MVP.
In an interview with Marc Spears of Andscape at the Paris Olympics, Durant’s mother detailed how that speech changed her life and also explained through tears how her sons saved her life.
“That speech let me know that he got it and he understood why I was the type of mother that I was,” Durant said of her son’s MVP speech. “Why I was so present and engaging and somewhat hovering. Because I wanted the best for my sons.”
“I love him,” teary Durant’s mother added later in the interview. “I love both of my sons so much. My sons literally saved my life. I wanted to quit on living, but I couldn’t because of them.”
Durant’s mother has been seen court-side at many of his biggest NBA games and has always been among the first to celebrate with him after big wins.

In his 16-year NBA career, Durant has won two Finals MVP awards. Recently becoming USA Basketball’s all-time leading scorer, Durant is looking to add a fourth gold medal to his extensive list of accomplishments.
Along with everything Durant has accomplished on the court, he has built a strong connection with his mother, as she detailed in this new interview.
