Anthony Davis’ parents, Erainer Davis and Anthony Davis Sr., raised a champion.

The Olympic basketball player has said that family is the “greatest luxury in life.” Speaking to Haute Living in 2019, the Los Angeles Lakers player said, “I think no matter what you go through, your family is always going to be there … No matter what I do or what I have, I know my family’s not going to change,” he continued. “Even when we fuss and fight, I know I can always count on them.”

Anthony credits his family for his love of basketball. “My whole family played basketball, and I don’t want to say I was forced, but I definitely fell in line [because of them] and fell in love with the game from there,” he told Haute Living.

The power forward also praised his parents on X (formerly Twitter) in 2013 saying that his mom and dad have “been through it all” with him. Ahead of making his NBA Finals debut seven years later, Anthony pointed out that his parents had “sacrificed so much for me.” He told ESPN, “I know they’re extremely proud and excited to be here.”

Anthony was born to Erainer and Anthony Sr. on March 11, 1993. In high school, the future NBA champion went through multiple growth spurts, which led his parents to continuously shop for their growing son.

“It was really weird. My mom was buying clothes for me and then they were too small,” Anthony admitted to ESPN in 2010. Meanwhile, his dad purchased a king-size, extra-long bed for him. The family also bought a pair of SUVs so that Anthony could “have room to stretch.”

Anthony’s parents were by his side when he got drafted to the New Orleans Hornets in 2012. Before his name was called, Anthony, who was seated between his mom and dad, admitted that he was nervous.

The basketball player celebrated being the first overall pick in the NBA Draft with hugs from both of his parents.

When Erainer and Anthony Sr. welcomed Anthony, they also had a daughter, Anthony’s twin Antoinette. The siblings also have an older sister named Iesha.

According to Sports Illustrated, Anthony’s carpenter father built a full-length basketball court in the backyard of their family’s house in the South Side of Chicago so that his kids could play together.

Per SI, Anthony Sr. didn’t want his kids encountering potentially dangerous situations in their neighborhood while trying to practice.

When it came to their son’s first NBA Finals during the COVID-19 pandemic, Erainer and Anthony Sr. wanted to be a part of the bubble created to keep athletes safe. During a sit down with ESPN, Anthony revealed that his dad was determined to find a way into the bubble and didn’t care if they had to quarantine for multiple days.

Anthony’s parents ended up getting out of quarantine in time for game one.

“This is my first one [NBA Finals],” he told ESPN. “My parents [are] here. They’re excited. I for sure had to have them come in and support me.”

Anthony added, “It’s a great feeling to have them here. I know they’re extremely proud of me. They tell me all the time. I’m happy that they can be here and watch me and support me and share this moment with me because you don’t get this moment all the time.”

Anthony Sr. looked every inch a proud father as he watched his son speak about him after the Lakers’ championship win in 2020.

“He’s one of my biggest supporters,” the NBA player said of his dad, noting that Anthony Sr. quarantined to be there for the moment. The Lakers player went on to reveal that his father is always texting him before games, telling him to “Go get it.”

“He’s my biggest critic, my biggest supporter. I know he’s proud of me,” Anthony said. “He was with me from the beginning of my career. Waiting for this moment. Both of us, waiting for this moment, and it’s here. He ain’t crying right now, but I know he’s gonna be crying in a minute.”

Anthony got his height from his parents

Anthony’s parents both stand tall like him. The NBA star’s dad is 6 feet, 3 inches, while his mom, Erainer, is 6 feet, 1 inch, according to CoachCal.com.

During an interview with the site, published in 2011, Anthony said it “was God’s gift to give” him height and talent.

They had a request for Shaquille O’Neal

Basketball legend Shaquille O’Neal revealed on NBA on TNT in 2024, that Anthony’s parents had a request for him.

He shared, “His mother and father, they came up to me and said, ‘We want you to stay on our boy,’ because I know what he’s capable of.” O’Neal seemingly listened and has continued to support Anthony as his career grows.

The NBA champion revealed to Haute Living in 2019 that he considered switching high schools after going through a growth spurt, but his father wanted him to stay at his current school, Perspectives Charter School.

“He told me, ‘No matter where you are, they’ll find you,’ ” Anthony recalled. “He wanted me to stay in this small school because he was very big on loyalty — and so was I — and I ended up making it to the pros. He made sure that I didn’t get off track or get caught up in the hype … It was the best thing that could happen for me.”

The Olympian is a self-proclaimed “momma’s boy.” In a video message released by the New Orleans Pelicans to celebrate Mother’s Day in 2017, Anthony confessed: “[My] mom’s an amazing person. [I’d] do anything for her. I’m definitely a momma’s boy. There’s no doubt about it.” The gold medalist also shared that he and his mother have “an unbreakable bond.”

Erainer confirmed that her son is, in fact, “a momma’s boy” while speaking with the Advocate in 2013. She shared at the time that when she would go to New Orleans, Anthony would want her to cook his favorite meal and she’d always bake chocolate chip cookies for him.

They surprised him on his 31st birthday

Anthony’s parents had a special treat for him to celebrate his 31st birthday in 2024. Following the Lakers’ win against the Minnesota Timberwolves, Erainer and Anthony Sr. brought a candle-less cake to the locker room.

“Where are the candles at?,” Anthony asked, to which his dad quipped, “I don’t know if we can put that many candles on here.” The Lakers shared a video of the moment, writing on Instagram: “Early birthday present from AD’s parents 🫶.”

Their family is charitable

Anthony told Haute Living in 2019 that his family is “huge on giving back” and “helping others.” He shared, “I learned a lot from my family in that aspect. Some of the stuff I have now, I didn’t have as a kid, so being able to help kids have some of the stuff I didn’t have — and adults as well — is important to me.”

When Anthony received the March NBA Cares Community Assist Award in 2016, the athlete said in a statement that “giving back means a lot to me and my family, so winning a Community Assist Award for the third year in a row is a great honor and a blessing.”
