LeBron James’ high school jersey is up for auction next month

LeBron James’ popularity is once again making waves as it’s about to set a new record. His high school jersey from his 2002 Sports Illustrated photoshoot is up for auction next month and is estimated to sell for $1-2 million.

As a result, it would set a new world record for a high school basketball jersey sold at auction. The ‘Chosen One‘ jersey has already appreciated significantly in value, as it sold for $187,500 in 2019 and $512,200 in 2021. Of all memorable high school basketball careers, LeBron James has a strong case to stand out tall on top.

Long before he started making waves in the league, the kid from Akron was already destined for greatness at St Vincent-St Mary High School. He famously led the team to three state championships before being drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers as the 2003 number-one pick straight from high school.

As revealed, the record auction, Julien’s Auctions “Legends In Motion,” will take place in Hong Kong on September 28 and feature limited-edition photo prints from the original Sports Illustrated shoot. The jersey’s sale comes as LeBron James’ legacy grows as a basketball legend and cultural icon.

This storied jersey represents the pivotal moment of LeBron’s ascension to basketball royalty and is one of the must-have collectibles of all time for sports memorabilia collectors, historians and fans.

David Goodman, CEO of Julien’s Auctions said in a press release

The Lakers legend and future Hall of Famer is no stranger to breaking and creating records as he currently sits atop the NBA’s all-time leading scorer. This coming season will mean a lot to him as he is set to play alongside his eldest sonBronny James.

LeBron James’ future tied to Lakers franchise as retirement looms

There was serious uncertainty about whether LeBron James would remain at the Los Angeles Lakers after the first-round playoff exit. However, convincing him to re-sign was the top priority and to much fanfare, he returned on a two-year deal with a player option.

As a result, former NBA player Kenny Smith believes that James will retire in a Lakers jersey, with his future tied to the franchise. James will turn 40 in December with the possibility that he could retire after the upcoming season or opt into the final year of his deal for a farewell tour in the 2025-26 season.

I think he ends his career as a Laker, that’s just my personal opinion. I haven’t spoken to him, or anyone with that influence.

Kenny Smith said in an interview with RG.org concerning LeBron James’ future

However, in spite of all the speculation, his retirement timeline is uncertain, but he remains one of the league’s elite players, defying Father Time over and over again. He would be among the players fans will look up to when the Lakers resume with the mission of capturing title number 18.
