LeBron James’ major Dalton Knecht praise resurfaced after the Lakers selected the sniper out of Tennessee with pick 17 of the 2024 NBA Draft.

The Los Angeles Lakers stood firm on the rumor that they’ll be keeping the 17th overall pick of the 2024 NBA Draft, and in the end, they got one of the steals of the draft in sharpshooter Dalton Knecht out of Tennessee. Knecht was one of the biggest head-turners of this past collegiate season as he scorched the nets for the Volunteers, and even LeBron James was impressed back in March with how the guard was playing.

Now that it looks as though James and Knecht, barring a major change, will both be playing for the Lakers next season, the former’s words of praise for the latter have resurfaced.

“We watched that Purdue-Tennessee game because of Zach Edey and [Dalton] Knecht. Players depending on who they are will drive attention when it comes to viewership,” James said back in March, via ClutchPoints Twitter (X).

Of course, LeBron James has expressed his love for a draft prospect in the past, and it didn’t exactly work out as planned. James was a big fan of Shabazz Napier back in 2014, and the Miami Heat, his team at the time, pulled out all the stops to get Napier. James ended up leaving the Heat to rejoin the Cleveland Cavaliers. Napier, who was a hero for UConn back in 2014, averaged 7/2/3 throughout his six-year career.

Nonetheless, Dalton Knecht should have the skillset to thrive in the role that the Lakers will have him play. Given how much attention he drew to himself amid Tennessee’s run to the Elite Eight, he should be a bit familiar with the pressure that comes with playing alongside James and Anthony Davis on the Lakers.

Did the Lakers just nab the steal of the draft?

The Lakers didn’t exactly give their fanbase reason for confidence that they will nail the 17th pick of the draft this time around. Last season, they selected Jalen Hood-Schifino; Hood-Schifino is yet to show anything in his career, playing in a grand total of 109 minutes in his rookie season as he failed to match the impact of the players drafted around his place of selection.

But the Lakers’ plan all night long was to assess how the draft was going to shake up prior to their selection. Devin Carter was a popular suggestion for the Lakers to pick, but he was gone by pick 13. But it became more and more likely that Dalton Knecht, a sharpshooter widely mocked to go in the lottery, was going to fall to their lap, and fall to their lap he did.

In ClutchPoints NBA insider Brett Siegel’s final mock draft, Knecht went off the board at pick seven, with the Portland Trail Blazers selecting him. Instead, the Lakers selected him 10 picks after, and now, they should have a ready plug-and-play option to bolster the team around LeBron James and Anthony Davis — a stark contrast from their selection of Hood-Schifino last year.

For starters, Knecht thrives as a movement shooter; with James helming the offense, he should have plenty of good looks, and at huge volume as well. New head coach JJ Redick should also see eye to eye with Knecht, with the two being sharpshooting specialists. It’s too early to make any sweeping declarations, but it looks like the Lakers got a major win by selecting the 23-year old sniper out of Tennessee.
