Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry surprised a fourth-grade girl who had written him a letter questioning why his sneaker line was only sold in men’s sizes; and now nine-year-old Riley Morrison will be wearing the new kicks at Friday’s game in Oakland as the All-Star guard’s guest of honor.  

Not only did Morrison inspire Curry to market his sneakers to women, but she also made a creative contribution by designing the inside of the new Curry 6s.

‘I just wanted it to change because I didn’t think it was fair,’ Morrison told ‘CBS This Morning‘ after meeting Curry at a pop-up shop in Oakland to see the finished product.

‘It’s two girls playing basketball and encouraging words behind it,’ she said, describing the design she made for the sneaker’s insert.

‘I wanted to make sure she was a part of that,’ Curry said. ‘So it’s awesome to be here to see the entire story come full circle.’

Morrison described the experience as a ‘dream come true,’ while Curry emphasized that it’s important to encourage girls to use their voice.

‘I want my girls to have that confidence,’ said Curry, who has two young daughters. ‘As a father, that’s a job we have every single day to shape that perspective.’

It’s a lesson that Morrison has taken to heart.

‘It’s definitely built up my confidence,’ she said. ‘Before I wasn’t very confident. I was very shy. So this definitely helped.’

As Curry told Morrison, ‘that’s good; that means you did something special.’

To Morrison, the biggest lesson was the power of a single letter.

‘We all have a voice and by simply writing a letter you can make a change,’ Morrison said.

That letter was originally sent back in November, when she wrote to Curry to ask for a girl’s size five.

Curry has two young daughters – Riley (left) and Ryan (right) – and he believes it’s important to build their confidence now 

‘I know you support girl athletes because you have two daughters and you host an all girls basketball camp,’ she wrote in the letter that was shared on social media. ‘I hope you can work with Under Armour to change this because girls want to rock the Curry 5’s too.’

Curry responded on Twitter: ‘Appreciate you helping us get better Riley! We got you.’ 

He also included his letter to Morrison: ‘I appreciate your concern and have spent the last 2 days talking to Under Armour about how we can fix the issue. Unfortunately, we have labeled smaller sizes as “boys” on the website. We are correcting this now! I want to make sure you can wear my kicks proudly – so I am going to send you a pair of Curry 5’s now and you’ll be one of the first kids to get the Curry 6.

‘Lastly, we have something special in the works for International Women’s Day on March 8th, and I want you to celebrate with me! More to come on that, but plan to be in Oakland that night! All the best!’

Curry kept his word and Morrison will be his guest of honor for Friday night’s game.
